HOW DOES SOCIAL MEDIA WORK FOR SMALL BUSINESSES?

It might seem like a dumb question but in fact it is one that needs answering as we get many queries with regard to marketing your business on social media which leads me to the conclusion that whilst most people are aware that social media websites can help their business they are at a loss as to how.

Many businesses have a Twitter account or a Facebook page but is it helping their business or is it simply a waster of time?

What about Google+, Linkedin, Pinterest, Stumbleupon, Flicker and similar, are you using any of them to engage with new audiences or to drive traffic to your website?

What is an important starting point for business owners contemplating the use of social media to promote their business is the need to understand that all of the important social media sites work differently and have different core audiences.

Take Twitter for example, it’s started out as vehicle for bored people to share useless information about what they were up to to but as it caught on it has become one of the best news and information channels in the world. In other words you can use it to stay completely up to date with the information and people you are interested whilst keeping an eye on what’s trending.

It’s a fantastic tool for sharing information instantly across the globe or to specific groups and that is what it does best.

Facebook on the other hand whilst seemingly being the same is in fact quite different as it is far more personal and is a wonderful tool for sharing and staying up to date with friends and family.

It’s also easy to see the potential of building an audience for your business page, getting your message out there, getting likes and engaging. The aim here is to inform gently and engage with certain customer types that you believe have the potential to become your customers at some point in the future.

Google +, Pinterest, Flicker and Linkedin all have different personalities, have different age groups and different users with varying interests so it would be a pointless exercise attempting to engage with all of them to promote specific products or services that are intended for a specific audience.

So yes, social media does work but you need to discover the best social media sites to use with your business and that way you will be engaging with an audience that have a potential value to your business. In effect, its all about effective social media marketing rather than just shouting your message from the rooftops at anyone that is passing.
