Most people know that recommendation is one of the best ways to get new business but what if you are a new start-up or a fledgling business? The fact is it’s a daunting prospect having to try and navigate your way through the various marketing options without having any real idea on what you’re doing.

Take a Plumber for example. How is he or she supposed to get any work let alone grow a business? A few years ago a plumber might have placed a few ads in the newspaper or took a bit of space in the Yellow Pages but these options are no longer available and most certainly wouldn’t deliver new clients even if they did.

Business marketing has changed dramatically over the past decade especially since the vast majority of consumers now use the internet to search and find services. That being the case the only real option for any service provider is to establish a reasonably decent website where the business services can be showcased to all and sundry.

The question then is how do you let people know your website is out there? It doesn’t matter how nice the website looks or how much money you spent, unless consumers know about your website or manage to find it then you won’t have any traffic.

Sadly, this is an all too familiar situation for many service providers who are really good at what they do but have no real idea about how to find clients for their business.

In fairness, they are not really expected to know how to develop a marketing strategy any more than I should wake up one morning knowing all about boiler installation.

Online marketing is a hugely complex business with thousands of variables depending on the type of service. What works well for one type of service doesn’t work for another simply because you need to deliver a specific message to a specific audience through specific channels to be really effective.

Take Twitter for example. Did you know that the same tweet sent at different times or on different days can get an entirely different response? What about email marketing? Have you discovered what the best time and day is to send out a few thousand emails?

The reality is that in setting up a marketing strategy for any business there will be some things we know that work and some that we don’t. In other words we go with what we know and then refine the strategy once we have some data. For example, if I sent out a batch of emails each day for a week or two I would soon be able to work out which day gave me the best response.

When it comes to developing a marketing strategy, here at JARE, we tend to favour the belt and braces approach initially and gradually do away with any marketing efforts that don’t deliver. In other words it’s a tried and tested system that works time and time again to deliver the best results.

As for the actual ingredients or what goes into the marketing strategy that very much depends on the type of business, the aims and the budget which will clearly have a huge impact.
